Year 9/10 English
2018 Programme
At Year 9 and 10, we provide a range of texts for students to start experiencing different cultures, societies and historic or future time periods.
We study novels such as "Trash" at Year 9 and "Tomorrow When The War Began" at Year 10. We delve into our own nation's culture in a film study of "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" in Year 9 and study the racism and prejudice of 1960's America in "The Help" at Year 10.
Speaking is an important focus in Years 9 and 10. We spend time looking at oratory and argumentative speaking to prepare students for the expectations of Speaking assessments at NCEA Level and to give them the confidence to speak in front of larger groups.
We assess both formal and creative writing multiple times throughout the year to give students the opportunity to improve on each piece they create, implementing all of the writing skills and techniques taught throughout the year.
